League of Legends Patch 15.17 Preview: Alternative builds, light changes and Worlds on the horizon

“We’re gearing up for the first major release of anti-boosting/smurfing stuff in 15.18… in the meantime we’re continuing our strategy of getting some alt-build variety,” wrote lead designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison in his patch 15.17 preview. This is a lighter pass that opens off-roles and alternative builds, trims a few overperformers, and sets the table for the Worlds patch.

Here’s what’s coming in Patch 15.17.

Champion Buffs: role flex and alternative builds

Riot is nudging a mix of champions toward fresh looks and off-roles.

• Irelia (AP)
• Kassadin
• Kayn (lane)
• Kog’Maw (AP)
• Miss Fortune
• Morgana
• Nilah (Nilah jungle is explicitly called out as an experiment)
• Senna
• Sett
• Vayne (Vayne jungle also highlighted as an experiment)

What it means: Expect testing around AP paths for Irelia and Kog’Maw, plus some draft mind-games if lane Kayn and jungle Vayne/Nilah land.

Champion Nerfs

Four champions are slated for nerfs:

• Gwen
• Master Yi
• Rumble
• Singed

Riot notes that recent red-side damage-over-time fixes have “stabilized really well,” but Rumble and Singed overshot and are being pulled back. Gwen has been the most present top laner and will gain clearer weaknesses.

System Buffs

Targeted nudges to underused items:

• Axiom Arc
• Horizon Focus (“has not really picked up a major audience outside of Vel’Koz types”)
• Profane Hydra (“failing to pick up any real number of users on first item… we’re buffing it with a skew toward first-item performance”)

Meta angle: If Profane’s early profile improves, expect experiments on ranged split-pushers and AD casters. Horizon’s bump helps artillery and poke. Axiom Arc could revive pick/reset comps.

Yunara

Yunara is “quickly climbing,” and Riot is pushing through bug-fix nerfs that primarily affect her bounce interactions, with follow-up monitoring planned for next patch.

The road to 15.18 and Worlds
