In a game with 170 champions, with more coming, you might need some help picking the character that fits you the most.
Maybe you watched the critically acclaimed show “Arcane” or maybe you just downloaded it by curiosity. Whichever the case might be, you downloaded League of Legends and decided to try it out. Despite the game still going strong as of writing this, the sheer amount of content and things to keep in mind can be a tad overwhelming.
In this article we’re going to talk about the best champions for beginners, the different roles they have and how to properly use them. Keep in mind, League of Legends does keep their champions on rotation, and it can be a hassle getting a hold of them. Which is why I recommend using this site to get accounts with different champions, skins, blue essence and even ranks! Make sure to give it a look.
Classes and Subclasses
There’s a total of 7 classes to choose from in League of Legends, with some subclasses sprinkled in:
Controller: Meant to protect their teammates and open the enemy to attacks.
These have two subclasses
- Enhancers: not the strongest and quite fragile. But they can buff and shield allies. Good teamwork is vital for this subclass!
- Catcher: These champions create “danger zones” by locking the enemy in place or other similar effects. Basically areas that if the enemy steps in, they’ll be in big trouble. They don’t rely on as much in allies, but it’s still very recommended not to fight an enemy by yourself with these.
Fighter: Melee champions with a focus on dealing damage. These have 2 subclasses as well.
- Juggernaut: This subclass is the one with the that can dish out and take the most damage, but in exchange their mobility is greatly hindered. You’ll have a very hard time catching up to the quicker champions.
- Diver: These fighters focus on moving quickly to attack high priority targets, such as any support or fleeing enemy. They don’t have as much health as some tankier classes, but they can hold their ground and are very hard to ignore without facing serious consequence.
Mage: Ranged champions that are meant to deal damage to enemies through their spells. There are 3 subclasses of mage.
- Burst: They single out targets from a distance and deliver incredible damage. Although, they can be very vulnerable if left alone or if the opponent is good with their movement.
- Battlemage: These champions have a vast array of area of effect attacks. Making them great at damaging an entire party of enemies at once. They also have good defense spells, which they’ll need as their range is significantly shorter than the rest of the characters of this class.
- Artillery: This subclass foregoes defense and mobility for range. The mage that can hurt you from the furthest, but if the enemy manages to get in close you’ll be in big trouble. Great for support!
Marksman: Marksmen, much like artillery, focus on hurting the opponent from afar, they rely on good item shopping to get the most out of them, and they are quite fragile. This class does not have any subclasses.
Slayer: These melee champions are fragile, but their high damage output makes them extremely deadly, even in 2v1 fights they can still hold their own thanks to their mobility. There are two subclasses.
- Assassin: These fragile champions must sneak behind the enemy line to take out the high priority targets. Luckily, their high mobility and defensive skills can be used to make a quick getaway once you finished your opponent.
- Skirmisher: the total opposite to assassins, these champions use their durability and defensive skills to stay in the fight while dealing very high damage to whoever happens to cross your path.
Tank: Without the high damage output that other classes have, these champions focus instead on taking damage and the enemy focus while the rest of your team takes out the opponents. There are two subclasses.
- Vanguard: these tanks focus on damage. They’re quick to get into the fight and starting it with explosive damage for your teammates to follow and finish the job, although knowing when to hold back is key with these champions.
- Warden: these defensive tanks are about standing your ground and making sure no one gets past you, as well as defending anyone behind you.
Specialist: These wildcards are hard to describe, as they don’t fit any mold. They’re all very different and are capable of wildly different things. Definitely good for experienced players that know what they want.

Champions
Now that we have established the many classes that this game has to offer, we can finally get into which champions might be the best fit for a beginner.
- Garen: This champion might be one of the most straight-forward in the entire roster. This juggernaut fighter can heal himself as well as dish out very good damage. Often times, your teammate might have to leave you to fend off the opponent by yourself. Garen excels in these situations. In my opinion, this is the best champion to start with.
- Caitlyn: If you watched Arcane, you’re familiar with this one! This marksman class champion has the biggest attack range out of every champion (as of writing this) thus making her a safe bet for people that don’t do well with the pressure of a melee fight. Although you have to keep your distance as she doesn’t have a lot of health!
- Leona: This vanguard class champion is one of the more “complex” characters for beginners. She can pull enemies towards your team and stun them, making them easy prey, she’s also equipped with defensive abilities.
- Warwick: This diver is great for beginners because of his self-healing and tracking abilities. Enemies will have a hard time shaking you off. He’s great if you’re trying to learn the jungle role.

In conclusion
Well, there you have it. Every class explained as well as some very useful tips as to who to pick first. Like I said previously, there are 170 characters to pick from so you’ll probably have to play a fair bit until you find the one that fits you just right. So go out there and try them!
