When we talk about the style of League of Legends (LoL), skins are the main thing. LoL does not allow skins to be traded on platforms like Tradeit (as in other games where cosmetics are traded on markets). Hence, the accumulation of skins is solely for collectors, for the sake of the repertoire, and to impress others.
In the meantime, certain games like Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) have set up an entire tradeable skin market, and the difference is quite substantial.
How The LoL Skins Market Works
One-minute comparison wouldn’t be amiss here: In CS2, skins are generally tradeable and are considered as one of the components of a player-driven economy (markets, skin trading sites), whereas in LoL:
- Skins are not shareable: once you purchase or unlock a skin, you can’t legally list it on trading marketplaces such as Tradeit or any other external platform.
- The collection is strictly for the personal owner, not for resale.
- As a result of these facts, the LoL skin community focuses more on possession (which skins you have) than on the trading side (what your skins are worth).
If a champion has more than 20 skins, it is primarily a “I have them all” kind of showcase rather than a chance of selling off.
Some of the factors that might lead to a high number of skins are the following:
- Popularity & high play-rate: Skins of those champions that are frequently picked in regular/premade/competitive games get more.
- Longevity: It matters how long the champion has been released, as the elder ones have had more time to gather skins.
- Flexible roles / broad appeal: The characters that can work in 2 or more different roles or have a broader fan base are the ones that get more skins.
- Aesthetic potential: If the champion’s model, lore, or appearance is something that can easily be turned into a mythic, futuristic, or themed series, designers will have more creative freedom.
These are the five champions that Riot Games’s art team can’t get enough of with the most skins of them (or simply by the most recent publicly disclosed figures), respectively.
1. Miss Fortune
At first, Miss Fortune is the leader of the pack: she currently has 22 skins, which makes her the champion with the highest number of skins in LoL.
How come there are so many? One or two reasons can be figured out: first of all, she has been with the game almost from the very beginning (released in 2010), secondly, she is a highly popular choice (most notably at ADC / marksman), and thirdly, her fantastic, pirate-queen, guns, spark, Riot has a lot of ways for the alternate looks.
To have 22 skins means she has been renewed time and time again. For collectors playing her, each new skin is an absolute necessity.
2. Lux
Lux is quite close to (or at least is recorded with a very high number) Miss Fortune. By the end of 2025, she will also have around 22 skins. Lux is adored: she can be played in multiple roles (mid, support), has a high pick rate, and her character model lends itself to many thematic variants (light-magic, cosmic, lore-based).
For players who main Lux, the sheer number of skins means that there is always something new to aim for, even though none of these can be traded externally.
3. Ahri
Ahri is another major contender in terms of the number of skins, with about 19 based on recent data. Ahri was released later (2011) but is still very popular. The nine-tailed fox is the visual idea that gives Riot a broad scope for the alternate appearance (traditional, futuristic, mythic, etc.).
From a collector’s perspective, Ahri’s skin-line breadth means that she is a top candidate if you like to own many cosmetics for one champion.
4. Akali
On different lists, Akali is approximately 20 skins behind and thus followed closely. She has been reimagined a couple of times, has a solid fan base in both mid and top lane, and the “ninja/assassin” theme allows for a variety of interesting alternate looks.
The Akali character style, movement, and visuals are highly focused, so the skins, which are typically brilliant, are for players who want to stand out visually.
5. Caitlyn
Completing the top five is Caitlyn, also noted for the high number of skins (around 20, as referenced)
Caitlyn, as the best example of the sharpshooter marksman role, benefits from popularity and longevity, which many skin releases result from.
For players who favour the long-range, rifle-wielding archetype, Caitlyn’s skin catalogue offers plenty of variation.
Final Thoughts
These five champions, Miss Fortune, Lux, Ahri, Akali, and Caitlyn, are basically the most enormous monsters of the skin game in LoL if you are a champion-collector type. Players with a large skin wardrobe will literally have dozens of looks to switch between if they pick one of these.
However, be aware that, unlike some games where skins can be sold or traded, in LoL, you are building your collection solely for your own pleasure and visual in-game. Next time you log in, see if your favourite champion has a new release, you might just be the next to skin wave.
